Breasts (Pits)
Unglazed ceramic fish and industrial shelves

2020

The sculptural set Pits presents us with a display of women’s breasts of different shapes, sizes and ages, all far removed from the idealised image of this part of the body promoted by fashion and advertising. Arranged on industrial shelves, with no intention of embellishing or eroticising, they appear to us as strange elements, resembling prostheses or containers, but in this alienation, paradoxically, they manage to offer a perhaps more reliable and normalising representation of this part of the female body. «On the fringes of male sexual fantasies, of the idealisation of its beauty, and of its symbolism linked to maternity, the real breasts remain dead, invisible, ignored, impossible, abandoned to their fate, waiting», writes the artist. Breasts is part of a group of sculptural works in which the artist explores the contrast between the biological body and the cultural body. It is a work about the experience of loss, about change and the passing of time, but also a vindication of normal bodies, subject to the transformation of aging.

Text of exhibition: Alexandra Laudo

The image of female breasts has been projected onto the fantasy of male desire to the point of almost completely obscuring it. What are breasts? What do breasts look like? Where are they? In terms of representations, female breasts are perhaps the most culturally abused part of the body. Outside of male sexual fantasies, the idealisation of beauty and the symbolism related to maternity, «real» breasts lie mute, invisible, ignored, impossible, abandoned to their fate, waiting.
