El ombligo es la primera cicatriz que marca el cuerpo del recién nacido y se considera un punto central en la anatomía humana. Más allá de su función física, simboliza un vínculo vital y un centro de referencia, como refleja la expresión “ser el ombligo del mundo”. Sin embargo, no busco representarlo como un símbolo cerrado, sino como una incógnita abierta, un interrogante.

En él se condensan, de manera casi paradójica, los sentidos: los ojos, la boca, la nariz y las orejas parecen estar allí reunidos, como un rostro fragmentado. Pero, a la vez, el ombligo es también una ausencia: la huella del cordón umbilical cortado, que separa y marca la independencia del cuerpo.

Esta dualidad hace del ombligo un umbral entre el interior y el exterior, entre lo que fuimos y lo que somos. Es un punto donde se encuentran presencia y ausencia, vínculo y ruptura. Más que un simple punto anatómico, es una invitación a mirar el cuerpo con otros ojos, a cuestionar nuestra percepción y a abrirse al misterio que encierra nuestra propia corporalidad.

The navel is the first scar that marks a newborn’s body and is considered a central point in human anatomy. Beyond its physical function, it symbolizes a vital bond and a point of reference, as reflected in the expression “being the center of the world.” However, I do not intend to represent it as a fixed symbol, but rather as an open enigma, a question mark.

Paradoxically, the navel seems to concentrate the senses: eyes, mouth, nose, and ears appear gathered there, like a fragmented face. At the same time, the navel is also an absence—the mark left by the severed umbilical cord, which separates and marks the body’s independence.

This duality makes the navel a threshold between interior and exterior, between what we once were and what we are. It is a point where presence and absence, connection and rupture meet. More than a simple anatomical spot, it is an invitation to see the body with new eyes, to question our perception, and to open ourselves to the mystery contained within our own corporeality.
